Case for your BITX20A Sir?

Doug Hendricks QRPkits has released a dedicated case for the BITX20A…and its quite the looker!

Getting a nice case for your beloved project is one of those hardy perennials…it keeps on coming up every year! (or in this case…or not case…every project) so its good to see a kit supplier tending to this need…FB QRPKITS.

The link to have a peruse is: –

My BITX20A is still in the 1/3rd finished stage and needs a bit of a debug…the thought of not having the tedious process of get it ‘boxed’ should help spur me on to finish it.

C’est la guerre

Despite best intentions I had not until tonight been able to update the HCQRPC site…sorry about that…real life intrudes.

Still t’is done now and I am looking forward to the next challenge which for me involves building the Beacon Controller from Expanded Spectrum Systems…which by the way came REALLY fast…FB…and putting together a Michigan Mighty Mite as the TX…or perhaps some other very simple (like your author) TX to work on 30m

I have been punching out some Manhattan Pads in anticipation…stay tuned for the next update.

HogCon Bin’n’Gone

Well here we are on a couple of weeks after HogCon 2008.

Was it a success?…well we think so!…those that came along enjoyed it very much and we received great feedback from the attendee’s…the only downside as far as Nicolas and I were concerned was that we would have preferred more people.

We were treated to two absolutely splendid talks by Hans G0UPL Hedgehog #4 and Dom M1KTA Hedgehog #8…these really were top drawer stuff!

Hans’ talk has encouraged me to get my act together on Beacons and Ihave ordered a Freakin’Beacon controller (Hans’ homebrew one looked to mind-boggling) from Expanded Spectrum Systems and some 10.140 crystals to go with it…I have signed on to the Knights of QRSS Mailing list and will be avidly gleaning info from the people there.

Dom brought back memories of the DXpeditions I have been on (although nothing as exotic as 3B8!)…if you have not been on one you owe it to yourself to give it a go….now how far away was Liechtenstein?

GB2QRP worked well although we could have had the mast up higher and would have if I had not managed to break one section whilst on holiday last month.

The ‘Show and Tell’ was good with some interesting stuff brought along by DomM1KTA , David G6DMF and Victor G3NJB.

In the prize draw we had two winners in the same family!…the prize from QRPME will go to Joshua Hedgehog#16 and the new Drew Diamond book from the G-QRP club will go to his Dad David G6DMF…

So there we go HogCon 2008 is no more…heres to HogCon 2009

As this was our first attempt at doing this sort of thing we are very happy with the result though as those attending said they had a really good time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves…which suggests we have the basics right.
Next year we are now plan’s are now afoot…first and foremost more publicity I think!
Heres some pictures from the event..
Thanks to everyone who made HogCon 2008 a success…cu next year.

Another door prize!…this time from G-QRP Club

Breaking news!!!

An e-mail from Graham G3MFJ (Hedgehog #13) informs that the G-QRP Club will also be sending us a prize to give away at HogCon!

From OM Graham…

‘The G-QRP Club will send a copy of the new Drew Diamond book (Volume 3) to the lucky recipient of the prize (It will have to wait until early October as we don’t get them from the printer until then).’

Cheers!…so we will have two lucky winners tomorrow!

The picture below is W1REX as taken by Grahams own fair hand.

HogCon 2008 now with added Prize….from QRPME !

Thanks to the generosity of that Master Lobster Wrangler and all round good egg Rex W1REX of Hedgehog #26 and QRPME fame we have a prize which will be given out to the lucky person whose name is drawn from the ha at Hogcon…no raffle tickets to be purchased, your entry to the competition will be included in your entrance fee.

What could you win you may well ask?

Well to be honest we do not know!

Rex has offered us a mystery prize which will be mailed to the lucky recipient after HogCon…Rex will only tease us by saying…

‘I will send him/her a special prize that will be a hit I’m sure’

A great big shout out to Rex for this sterling gesture…mni tnx OM

Dom M1KTA & Hedgehog #8 updates us on the 3B8/M1KTA talk

Dom has been back in contact with a few more words on his 3B8/M1KTA talk.

Dom plans to cover the following: –

  • Why 3B8?
  • What was involved in trying to operate from there and hints for others (NB: 3B9, 3B7 and 3B6 can all be reached from 3B8 relatively easily)
  • What equipment did I take?
  • Why operate from someones shack and not /P?
  • Why did I have the wait 72 hours before operating and why was this a good thing?
  • An operating timetable (so if want to try a DX trip whilst on holidaysome hints)
  • DXpedition qrp with a blank sun…. you must be mad!
  • QRP operating does not mean you are ‘road kill’ to use American phrase.
  • 1st hand newbie DX operator errors….how NOT to handle a pile up!
  • DX Cluster spots are not always a qrp operators friend.
  • What exactly does operating split really mean when you are the DX station.
  • QRP operating modes.
  • Backup rig etc.
  • What else did I do radio wise whilst there?
  • QSL cards, the aftermath of DX operation what it will mean to you.

This looks really fabulous stuff Dom…I know the QRP world is mainly known for its ‘technical’ articles, but to my mind ‘how to’ and  ‘inspirational’ articles are a really splendid way of bringing the QRP experience to life.
